Kühlhaus Berlin (The 5th)

Ludwig van Beethoven
Piano Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53 "Waldstein"
Frederic Rzewski
The People United Will Never Be Defeated!
36 Variations on a Chilean Song

Tickets: €25 / €18

Two revolutionaries, two continents, one unforgettable evening. Benjamin Hochman pairs the brilliant originality of Beethoven's "Waldstein" Sonata with Frederic Rzewski's epic The People United Will Never Be Defeated!, nearly an hour of wild, virtuosic variations on a Chilean protest song. Rzewski, an American, studied with Elliott Carter right here in Berlin and cut his teeth in the German avant-garde. When he played the piece in West Germany in 1977, critics called him a traitor. Fifty years later, it stands as a modern answer to Beethoven's own great variation works.

Between pieces, Hochman shares the stories behind the music. German and American traditions meet and spark something new. Come hear it up close.
